Neurology

Neurology at BSMS has strengths in neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Our research focuses on neurological conditions such as motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy.

Current research interests include the identification of biomarkers and treatments for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, measurements of fatigue and corticospinal excitability in multiple sclerosis, the development of novel behavioural therapies for treating epilepsy, and the role of peripheral neuroinflammation in chronic pain. Our research utilises a broad range of techniques that include neuroimaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation, quantitative sensory testing, motion analysis, as well as electrophysiological and molecular techniques. We also conduct clinical trials into neurological conditions and have recently led a successful trial into the effectiveness of low dose interleukin-2 for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
