Our extensive range of postgraduate taught modules covers clinical, professional and research subjects in depth. Many individual modules can be taken for CPD purposes alone. Teaching is usually an intensive five-day block over one week, although some modules are taught over several weeks.

Communicable Diseases

The module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of communicable diseases (CDs) globally. Students will gain a understanding of core principles of CDs control including screening, vaccination, stewardship, surveillance and investigation. It provides students with a understanding of the interactions between agents, hosts and the environment in CDs transmission. This enables students to appreciate the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to prevention and control.
Global Health Principles

This module provides students with a conceptual and practical understanding of the multiple, broad and often interrelated socio-political and economic determinants of health and ill-health within and across countries. In so doing the module empowers students to use a political economy of health perspective to critically examine current global health challenges and their potential solutions.

Global Burden and Management of Disease

This module introduces students to the spectrum of disease found across the world, focusing on the most prevalent health problems globally. The module looks at the populations and social groups these diseases affect and the implications for individuals and societies before critically exploring current disease management strategies and their successes and/or shortcomings. The module touches only briefly on the biomedical aspects of the diseases, giving attention more to their broader socio-political, economic and environmental causes and solutions.

Leadership and Change Management in Clinical Services

This module will enable those interested in leading and transforming services to critically appraise how to work with and challenge reform programmes, examining their impact on: service structures and relationships between: public and private providers; clinical commissioners and clinical providers; local authorities; third sector agencies; local communities; patients and the public This module will provide an overarching understanding of the organisational context for change in health & care service settings, to enable managers, practitioners and professionals to contribute more effectively in leading and improving the design of service models and new organisational bodies, and the delivery, cost effectiveness, and outcomes of services.

The module will enable the participants to reflect upon their teaching and learning, and to explore and apply educational theories and new skills proactively in their current and future teaching and professional practice. An evidenced reflective portfolio based on a Personal Development Plan will support their progress in medical teaching. Inter-professional, peer and patient involvement in this teaching process will normally be evident.
Technology Enhanced and Blended Learning

This module is designed to offer participants the opportunity to plan, design & develop the implementation and evaluation of a technology enhanced learning activity/digital learning resource in a clinical/medical education environment relevant to their own practice. Participants will engage in on-line faculty and peer support. Students will keep a reflective journal on the development process for the duration of the module.

Conflict and violence affect millions of people globally and are important determinants of both physical and mental health. This module builds students’ critical understanding of the complex relationship between conflict, violence and health. It will examine conflict and violence at individual, community, national and global levels, critically analysing the factors and relationships that influence the development of different forms of violence in diverse contexts. The module helps students engage with and critically explore inter-displinary, inter-sectoral and inter-institutional interventions for prevention and control.
Economic Evaluation in Healthcare

The economic evaluation aims to assure the efficient use of health care resources and increase the transparency of resource allocation decisions. Starting from introducing the basic concepts in health economics, the module advances on methodological principles and recent developments in the theory and practice of economic evaluation. This module covers the main areas of economic evaluation including methods for measuring and analysing costs and health outcomes, ways of handling uncertainty, basics of economic modelling and principles of decision-making.

This module provides an overview of current and developing perspectives of public health and practical applications. It considers global national and local issues, as well as environmental and social factors affecting the public health. It sets the context for approaches to reduce inequalities in health. The impact of health promotion and educational strategies developed to implement public health policies are explored.

Diabetes Practice in Primary Care

This module aims to enable primary care practices to fulfil the requirements of the National Service Framework for the provision of diabetes care in primary care. It seeks to enhance clinicians’ existing knowledge of diabetes and its management in a primary care setting to improve patient outcomes. It aims to give a broad grounding in Insulin management and therapeutics, which can be built upon in module MDM177.
Quality, Safety and Service Improvement in Clinical Services

Obesity, Diet and Food Systems

This module applies an evidence-based approach to weight, one of the most burning issues in Public Health. Weight has direct and indirect links with local and global aspects of food systems, sustainability, cultural dynamics, and individual preferences and behaviours. Looking critically at local and global policies and interventions, the module uses a “what works” approach to identify and analyse relevant, promising practices for change.

Sustainable Healthcare

This module introduces approaches to environmentally sustainable healthcare. This encompasses organisational strategy, quality improvement at the institutional level, and more subject-specific matters on digital transformation, circular economy principles, materials and waste, medicines optimisation, procurement, estates, and travel and transport. The principles of carbon footprinting are introduced, along with environmental pollution and labour rights issues in the medical supply chain.
Decolonising Health: Reimagining Health Equity

If we want to address issues around health inequities, then we must decolonise health. This module develops the skills and critical understanding needed to do so through diverse knowledge sources. Decolonisation is explored in terms of knowledge and research, medical practice, health concepts and systems, and health institutions.
