Clinical modules

Our extensive range of postgraduate taught modules covers clinical, professional and research subjects in depth. Many individual modules can be taken for CPD purposes alone. Teaching is usually an intensive five-day block over one week, although some modules are taught over several weeks.

This is a pragmatic multidisciplinary and multi-centred module that is specifically designed for all health professionals involved in clinical trials and in the management of research projects. Participants will be able to apply their learning immediately to their work.

Understanding Dementia

The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the neuroscience of dementias as well as their clinical presentation. Students will learn the classification of disorders presenting with dementia and understand the links between pathology and clinical symptoms and signs. This module should also give students good preparation for choosing and conducting a supervised research project later in the course.

The module will be taught by senior clinicians, experienced in the diagnosis and management of patients with dementia.  The module ensures students gain a critical understanding of the principles of diagnosis and treatment of dementia and how these can be applied in clinical settings.

Psychological and Social Perspectives of Dementia

The experts in the reality of living with dementia are those who have dementia themselves and their loved ones.  Some of these individuals will contribute to this module.  This module will involve a systematic and comprehensive exploration of the psychological and social impact of dementia encompassing a range of important topics that affect the individual, those close to them, their relationships and wider society. Topics will cover areas from very early in the illness to end of life.  The module is interactive and engaging.

Advanced Diagnostic & Multimodality Nuclear Medicine

To provide a critical understanding of advanced diagnostic and multimodality Nuclear Medicine techniques in clinical practice and research, involving non FDG tracers and development of new and novel PET and SPECT tracers. The module provides students with the knowledge and skill to critically appraise how multimodality hybrid imaging builds confidence in diagnosis across the spectrum of pathology using non FDG tracers including oncology, cardiology, neurology and infectious/inflammatory diseases.  The module also provides students critical knowledge of advanced nuclear medicine volumetric quantification methods.

Molecular Radiotherapy and Theragnostics

The aim of this module is for students to develop a critical understanding of the therapeutic application of nuclear medicine (molecular radiotherapy, MRT) and the use of specific labelled tracers to locate and stage tracer avid disease which can then be targeted for molecular therapy (theragnostics).

The module provides a basis for the student to develop a systematic and comprehensive understanding of - and skills in - the care and management of patients requiring invasive management of their cardiac condition.  The module includes percutaneous interventions and coronary artery and valve surgery, the assessment of patients undergoing non-cardiac operations and the management of haemodynamic instability.

Principles and Practice of Simulation in Healthcare

The module covers all aspects of simulation based clinical/medical education. Learners will be introduced to educational principles underpinning the use of simulation in teaching and learning, high fidelity simulation and technical issues, typology of simulation based activities, communication skills in simulation, evaluation and assessment in simulation.

The module covers all aspects of feedback and debriefing used in simulation based medical education. Learners will be introduced to how transformational learning and constructivism are applied to simulation based learning, including the role of extrinsic and intrinsic conversations, guidelines for debriefing psychomotor tasks, and critical reflective practice through writing.

Access to Medicines

The module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of issues surrounding access to medicines and to equip students to critically assess current access to medicines policies & programmes. The module examines the barriers to access to medicines in resource-poor settings and analyses the evidence informing interventions to improve acces.

The overall aim of this module is to equip students with an advanced level of understanding of challenging paediatric conditions and their organisational and service delivery contexts. This module aims to enable students to understand multi-disciplinary approaches to managing long term conditions in children. The students will develop insight into evidence-based practice, in the clinical, social and psychological aspects of management involved in these conditions. This module is clinically focused and non-disease specific. The student will develop a critical understanding of the research, policies and practice relating to long term conditions in various organisational contexts. The module provides opportunities to network with professionals from different disciplines and share best practice.

The module comprises aims to achieve an advanced level of understanding of auto-immunity at a molecular level and apply this systematically to a wide variety of diseases across several medical specialties. The module will develop students’ critical reasoning to a high level through case analysis incorporating both individual student presentation and group problem solving.

This module focuses on “Intensive Care Medicine”, exploring both the pathophysiology of common conditions which result in severe life threatening illness, and the modern management of these problems. The module will pay specific attention to what is different about treating illness in an Intensive Care setting and on the wards, and focus on ethical aspects of treatment. Simulation of various scenarios will explore the team-working, leadership and technical and organisational skills needed to work in an Intensive Care environment.

Insulin Management, Therapeutics and Monitoring in Primary Care

This module explores all aspects of insulin and therapeutics in diabetes, in primary care settings. The aim of the module is to help clinicians become confident and competent in the theory and practice of management of people with diabetes treated with insulin and other injectable or oral agents in multiple scenarios following the move to GP led management of diabetes.

This advanced module educates the implant practitioner in the use of emerging technology modalities. The knowledge provides adjunctive information used in provisional and definitive treatment planning and treatment modalities. The concept and practice provides sufficient bone volume and adequate soft tissue thickness to enable implants to be placed at the most optimal position from a prosthetic aspect.

This module aims to advance the student’s knowledge of the organisation of emergency care services such as trauma networks and pre-hospital medicine and provide specific training in a variety of clinical areas. These include the management of specific conditions such as polytrauma, head injury, medical and surgical emergencies in children as well as tuition in general areas such as fluid management and transfusion, management of transfers and multidisciplinary roles and team working.
