Name: Steven Fowler-Tutt
Job title: Curriculum and Assessment Officer Phase 3
Year started at BSMS: 2022

Tell us a bit about your background

I grew up in Hove and Portslade, actually being born in the Royal Sussex Hospital 1990. Later I moved to Kent to study Physics in Kent for 5 years, doing an BSc and later MSc. Then afterward, following my part time work during my studies, working at FE colleges in Sussex and Surrey on Funding and Management of Information Systems. 5 years ago, I moved back to Brighton and was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure. Leaving my previous career in FE education in information management I joined BSMS as lockdowns ended. Working at the hospital allows me to attend clinics and continue my treatment while working full time.

What’s your role like day-to-day?

Education is feels very similar no matter where you are and at what level. We all cover for each other and have to be dynamic in our roles within the team. I have recently left my role as Year 3 coordinator and spend my days training my replacements and fulfilling my new role as Assessments Officer. Each day currently is a mixture of new work and training my previous role. Whether it is organising assessment or planning for exams there is always something in the future to prepare for. Also, any spreadsheets and data processes I can get my hands on.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

It is very satisfying when all the work of the team comes to fruition, always trying to improve on the previous year. I have worked in education, in some form, for 12 years straight now and enjoy the teamwork aspect the most. When the team’s chip in to help run efforts like enrolment and exams. In my personal work I only want to be working on something if I can improve it and look to always increase accuracy and efficiency in the processes we administer. This is especially prevalent in BSMS because we often too unique to use the universities systems/processes so we are more in control of our own data, communication, systems, curriculum planning and timetabling.

Tell us about a professional/personal goal you have recently achieved.

Professionally, I have recently reached the same grade at work as I left in my previous, quite specialised, work in FE education. The move was for health reasons, but I am very committed in my role in the Emerton School Office and delighted to reach a role equivalently valued and comparable progression.

A personal goal is being trusted to and for the last year needling myself onto dialysis at home. I found this process quite harrowing at first but overcome this due to necessity and being able to manage my time and do this alone at home. Important personally as I have things I want to do and a mortgage to pay!

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know about you.

Came second in a Karate tournament for my age bracket.

I arranged my wedding “with all trimmings” in less than 29 days.

I was the youngest millionaire.

Two of the above are true.

What are your other interests / hobbies?

When I am not spending most my hours on dialysis… I’m a very keen football fan going to all the Brighton and Hove Albion home games since I was a schoolboy. I also enjoy going on short holidays, a good pub or café, live music, country walks, and more recently my wife has been introducing me to the theatre! Otherwise, I spend the most hours doing dialysis.
