Name: Paul Vigg
Job title: Student Advice Coordinator

Tell us a bit about your background

I grew up in Cornwall and left home to study contemporary dance at the University of Chichester. I moved to Brighton in 2010 and since coming to the city I have worked for the University of Sussex in various roles and trained as a humanistic counsellor before joining BSMS.

What’s your role like day-to-day?

I’m either in the Student Advice Hub or working from home, answering student queries in person or by email, booking appointments with our team of advisers and creating/sharing resources around wellbeing and being a successful student and a grounded human.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy having the chance to help busy, highly motivated medical students take a moment to slow down and reflect.

In terms of successes, which accomplishments are you most proud of?

I think my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in dance, and my PGDip in humanistic counselling from the University of Brighton. I also recently wrote a fantasy novel which I had been putting off for probably a decade!

How do you contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment at work?

As a queer person and member of the LGBTQ+ community I always have inclusivity at the forefront of my mind and try to represent my communities wherever I can. I also firmly believe it is my work as a white person to understand how racism and discrimination impacts the lives of students and people in general.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know about you.

Most people don’t yet know that I’m also a meditation teacher and I’m excited to see what I can do with that knowledge.
