Tell us a bit about your background

My professional journey commenced in the field of nursing where I dedicated approximately 12 years to serving as an operating theatre nurse. Throughout this period, I contributed my skills and expertise in healthcare settings such as Kent, St Thomas’ Hospital in London and Brighton. I then embarked on a new adventure, returning to education and successfully gained a media degree at the University of Brighton. Subsequently, I spent 13 years working alongside media students at a local further education college. This role allowed me to integrate my practical nursing experience with the theoretical insights gained through media studies, shaping a well-rounded professional profile and diverse skill set. For the past decade, I've been a part of the BSMS TEL team, where I've seamlessly integrated my diverse background. Combining my extensive experiences in nursing and media has brought my professional life full circle, allowing me to contribute uniquely to my current role.

What’s your role like day-to-day?

My role specifically involves all things media, including recording and editing videos for staff and student interviews and OSCE exams. I have created videos for the clinical skills team, which involves creating clinical skills scenarios or filming a clinical skills session to be used in student teaching and learning. I also create web-based e-tutorials and mobile apps and most recently have designed a set of icons for the Neuroscience Department.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy being creative in my work, whether designing an academic poster, developing a mobile app or exploring new and emersive technologies, including VR and AI.

In terms of successes, which accomplishments are you most proud of?

My most successful achievement during my time at BSMS is the creation of the Anatomy Learning app. The anatomy app was developed to enable the anatomy team to use a digital resource instead of using paper materials in the lab, and to provide a web interface they could use on an iPad while at the dissection table. The pandemic came with its unique set of challenges for teaching in the lab and the anatomy team were tasked with creating videos to enhance student learning during this difficult period. To deliver the best possible learning outcomes, I designed and developed an app and staff administration area in order to make the content more accessible, I think that's been quite successful so far. The anatomy team have been using digital technology in the anatomy lab since 2016 and have nearly 60 iPads, ultrasound probes and VR headsets. My role has definitely evolved due to my experiences in developing and delivering these resources.

How have you developed your skills professionally since joining BSMS?

I particularly enjoy creating materials that are useful for the students and BSMS more widely. I challenge myself more and more in everything I do which can be quite tricky sometimes but the end result is always worth it! My skills in computer programming have developed threefold during my time at BSMS, and undertaking regular workshops with a local charity that facilitates tech skills in underrepresented groups has enabled me to gain confidence and use those skills in my work.

What are your other interests/hobbies?

During my spare time, I create winter-themed greeting cards of Brighton landmarks. I had a small exhibition last year and was a seller at my first makers fair this year. I also built a 3D model of the Brighton Pavilion with lego bricks to feature in my online art gallery. To celebrate BSMS’ 20th anniversary, I volunteered to design this year’s Christmas card.
