BSMS once again hosted its annual Summer School for students on the BrightMed and BrightIdeas programme from 23-26 July. Eighty-five year 12 students from across the UK stayed in university halls of residence, took part in medical school activities and experienced life as a medical student.
Participants got hands on with clinical skills, took part in anatomy dissections, learnt about medical ethics and undertook mock multiple mini interviews (MMIs), as well as many other activities. Attendees were supported by 24 student mentors, all current medical students at BSMS.
One attendee, when asked about their experience, said: “My biggest takeaway would be the significance of effective communication and teamwork. This summer school enabled me to improve my communication skills, learn how to work collaboratively in a healthcare team and understand the significance of clear and empathetic communication with patients.”

The BrightMed and BrightIdeas Summer School is a widening participation activity, designed to ensure that students from a diverse and often disadvantaged background are provided with opportunities that they may not otherwise experience, and to encourage them to apply to medical school and pursue a career in medicine. Therefore, all attendees met widening participation criteria to be eligible to participate.
The BSMS Outreach team would like to thank all of the academic staff and healthcare professionals who supported this year’s Summer School, including: Cindy Gaimster (Senior Physiotherapy Lecturer); Clare Morfoot (Senior Lecturer Health and Social Care); Diana Byrne (Patient Educator); Dominic O’Brien (Lecturer in Anatomy); Jill Bennett (Clinical Skills and Simulation Educator); Michelle Tant (Senior Lecturer Midwifery); and Pippa Walton (Clinical Skills and Simulation Educator).
