Wendy Wood has joined BSMS as the new Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (BSCTU). Here she tells about her previous roles, what her role at BSCTU will entail and her inspirations.
Welcome to BSMS! Where were you before joining the medical school?
I have been working for the NIHR Research Design Service in Brighton, so I know the local research community which has been really helpful to get me off to a good start in this new role.
What will your role at the BSCTU entail?
As Director, I will be responsible for overseeing the work of our Trial Managers, Statisticians and Data team running some varied and interesting studies. I will also be working with researchers from BSMS and other institutions to develop new grant applications.
What attracted you to the role and what are you looking forward to doing in the role most?
It was such a great opportunity. I have worked in a number of other CTUs so had a good insight into what the role involved. I am looking forward to growing the CTU and enhancing the reputation of BSMS as a great place to carry out clinical research.
How did you end up working in clinical trials? Did you always plan to, or did you have another career in mind?
I didn’t really have a plan. After finishing my PhD at Sussex I went to the careers office to see what I could do with nursing and a PhD in Biochemistry – they suggested clinical research and the rest is history. I have always made the most of any opportunities that came up and taken some risks with my career.
What has been your proudest moment in your career to date?
Getting this job! It is great to be in a role that uses all my varied experience and I am so lucky to have inherited a thriving CTU with full registration and a fantastic team thanks to the hard work and dedication of Nicky Perry, who retired at the end of May.
Who was your biggest inspiration when you were growing up?
My parents were great role models as I grew up – supportive, adventurous and kind.
What are your favourite hobbies outside of work?
I used to love sailing and winter sports but had to stop both after I broke my knee skiing. Now I do more sedate things like travel, gardening and knitting.
