The Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre (CISC) at BSMS celebrated its 15th anniversary with an open day on Thursday 8 December at the Medical School Teaching Building. Around 90 delegates attended the day from partner universities, the medical school, the NHS and the industrial sector.
The aim of the day was to showcase CISC, its people, research and equipment, and thereby to facilitate and encourage new collaborations.
Emeritus Professor Paul Tofts gave the keynote address on ‘Quantitative MR: measuring the invisible’, where he reflected on the important role of quantitative MRI in clinical research and its potential role in diagnosis, and discussed the evolution of CISC in the 15 years since the centre opened.
See more about CISC in the short video below, which was played throughout the open day.
Morning talks spanned from informatics and machine learning, the centre’s new low field MRI scanner, quantitative MR imaging in neuromuscular disease to MR-imaging of the eye and orbit, and the effects of a four day week on mind, brain and body.
The diversity of recent and current research performed at CISC was fully on display during the One-Minute Power Pitches session that concluded the morning session. Thirteen pitches drawn from the academic and clinical work performed at CISC illustrated the wide range of research questions that can be answered with biomedical imaging.
During lunch, delegates were given the opportunity to network and to attend eight stalls showcasing research groups, industrial partners and health centres.
In the afternoon, delegates joined one of three break-out sessions focusing on engagement between CISC and clinical, academic and industry partners. Discussions aimed at uncovering obstacles standing in the way of achieving research aims and developing solutions to overcome these difficulties. At the final session, panel leads presented their group’s main conclusions and the actions needed to be taken to further boost the level of engagement between CISC and the research, clinical and industrial sectors.
Professor Itamar Ronen, Academic Director at CISC, said: “The open day was a great success, with excellent levels of engagement from delegates attending from a wide range of backgrounds. We were able to explore the exciting potential the centre offers in terms of collaboration in research with these colleagues, and look forward to further developing these opportunities.”
