Thursday 1 September 2022 saw Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) host an exciting day of research presentations and talks from early career researchers. With a programme spanning the diverse range of research across all the departments within BSMS, the event provided an opportunity to learn about the varied studies and impact being developed by early career researchers within the School.
Speakers included:
- Rich Gorman, talking about ‘Researching the worlds of genomic medicine: Experiences of using arts-based-methods to understand life with rare conditions’
- Md Ilias Kamal Risat, presenting ‘Understanding the notions of ‘good death’ in Bangladesh: Anthropological exploration’
- Jonathan Sadler, discussing ‘Uncertainty in medicine, what does it all mean?’
- Ben Hicks, presenting ‘DETERMIND: exploring inequalities and inequities in the post-diagnostic dementia care pathway
- Eleanor Jayawant, exploring ‘Fingerprints of Lymphoma’
- Leena Al-Hassan, talking about ‘Interdisciplinary research on Antibiotic Resistance in Africa’
- Ben Towler, discussing ‘Unlocking the role of RNA degradation during the cellular stress response’
- Lisa Quadt, presenting ‘Neurodevelopmental complexity: Inflammation mediates the link between neurodivergence and chronic fatigue’
- Gem Aellah, explaining ‘How does policy get made? Perspectives on policy making related to Neglected Tropical Diseases’
The research day featured a range of talks and networking opportunities for attendees
Alongside the presentations from ECRs the event also featured a welcome from Professor Malcolm Reed and a series of presentations focusing on research and career development from Professor Sarah Newbury (Director of Research, BSMS), Dr Erika Mancini (Director of Research Staff Development), Professor Simon Waddell (Module Lead on Independent Research Projects), Dr Deeptima Massey (Research Manager, BSMS), and Hazel Cowper (Research Development Manager).
The event created a space for ECRs to meet and network, particularly important for colleagues who have joined the School during the previous few years of Covid-19 restrictions.
The event was well attended and plans are already underway to build on the success and continue to provide opportunities for the early career community at BSMS.
