Case-based learning platform receives funding to transform medical learning across the world

Innovate UK has funded just over £130,000 to CAPSULE, an innovative learning resource developed by Ocasta and Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). The aim of the funding is to deliver worldwide access to high-quality, case-based learning for millions of medical students and schools, powered by UK medical school expertise.

CAPSULE is a unique learning resource which contains almost 700 cases and 3,500 questions, all written by senior clinicians and aligned to the core medical curriculum.

The funding will be used to support the global deployment of the platform and enhance its existing functionality. Ocasta will do this by making the platform more scalable, improving the signup process, and promoting the strengths and capabilities of the UK medical education sector. Ocasta aim to showcase the skills of UK medical schools and their leading educational capabilities and approach to medical learning across the world.

Increased health service demands make it more challenging for medical professionals to meet all the training needs of students. CAPSULE has an opportunity to help alleviate this by providing a comprehensive knowledge tool with reliable content all delivered through an engaging platform.

Innovate UK Executive Chair Dr Ian Campbell said: "In these difficult times we have seen the best of British business innovation. The pandemic is not just a health emergency but one that impacts society and the economy. CAPSULE, along with every initiative Innovate UK has supported through this fund, is an important step forward in driving sustainable economic development. Each one is also helping to realise the ambitions of hard-working people."

Tim Vincent, Learning Technologist and CAPSULE project manager at BSMS, said: “We are delighted that the UK government has recognised the educational value and technical expertise of CAPSULE in the UK. We are equally pleased that this funding will enable medical students and clinical educators across the globe to benefit. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Ocasta in this next exciting phase.”
