Aaron Phillips profile photo

Year 4 student Aaron Phillips discusses why he decided on a career in medicine, how he managed the transition to university study, and what he has enjoyed the most about studying at BSMS.

What made you want to study medicine?

To find a career I could get fulfilment from. I thought if I found something where I can improve the quality of someone's life every day it could be something I would find fulfilment from.

How did you choose which medical schools to apply to?

For myself, it was the criteria medical schools had set out, and which ones I most closely met.

What made you want to study at BSMS?

I decided to go to Brighton because it is a well-established medical university and has a beautiful location.

Do you have any advice for managing the transition to university?

Go at your own pace, socialise as much/as little as you need. You will be at medical school for five years minimum, take your time and make friends at your own speed.

What’s the best way to study?

Everyone is different, but there's a general better way to absorb information. Look at how to study, it'll save you potentially hundreds of hours across medical school.

What has been your favourite part of the BSMS Medicine course?

The clinical rotations.

What has been your favourite part of living in Brighton and Hove?

The summer season by the beach, I've never lived by the sea and it is amazing.

Are you involved in any sports or societies?

BSMS squash society. I highly recommend joining a society, it's a great way to make connections with people you may not otherwise speak to, who share a common hobby.

What has been your BSMS highlight?

Making a difference to patients’ lives.

If you could go back in time to give one tip to your younger self, what would it be?

Do NOT work by yourself during your years at medical school. You will drastically increase your productivity by working with others.

Describe your medical school experience in three words?

Progress, difficult, fulfilling.
