About this webinar

Two BSMS colleagues from the Department of Medical Education, Professor Mike Okorie and Dr Sarah Partridge, are working with the British and Irish Hypertension Society to organise a free evening educational webinar to celebrate World Hypertension Day on 17 May.

In England alone an estimated 5 million people are unaware they have high blood pressure, putting them at increased risk of stroke or heart attack. Measuring and treating the blood pressure of these individuals will save lives and is a key priority in the NHS Long Term Plan.

The aim of the BIHS webinar to celebrate World Hypertension Day is to bring together community pharmacists, GPs, nurses and all healthcare professionals involved in the measurement and treatment of high blood pressure to celebrate their contribution to this important public health initiative.

We have planned four lively and interactive talks covering the global burden of hypertension, the latest research, challenges and opportunities for community blood pressure screening programs and accurate blood pressure measurement.

Speakers include Professor Terry McCormack, President of the British and Irish Hypertension Society, a GP in Whitby and Professor of Primary Care Cardiovascular Medicine at Hull York Medical School; Professor Neil Poulter the Chief Investigator for May Measurement Month and Professor of Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine at Imperial College London; Mr Ali Jawad, a community pharmacist at Willesden Medical and Mrs Liz Denver a clinical and hypertension research nurse.

Mike and Sarah will co-chair the event and very much look forward to putting your questions to the panel. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to them to discuss the event further at s.partridge@bsms.ac.uk and m.okorie@bsms.ac.uk.
