About this session

This seminar is about the experience of Mexican immigrants that are affected by Chagas disease in California. It is through the representation of Chagas as a rare disease that participants make sense of it. A positive diagnosis has meant the disruption of patients’ sense of normality and self-image, as well as their re-configuration of memories of homeland while living in rurality and poverty. Access to treatment and medical care, as well the support of family and health professionals, was the major coping mechanism to overcome emotional and social impact that come along with the disease. This study is part of a large project to understand how Mexican population experience Chagas disease at both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border.
