About this session
My name is Dr Fionnuala Finnerty and I was born the year the HIV epidemic really started to take off. This big disease with a little name seemed to affect certain communities more than others and in the beginning was not taken seriously. It weakened people's immune systems and caused them to get serious and life threatening infections.
Throughout my lifetime, HIV has gone from a disease that led to almost certain death to a completely treatable one. The stigma surrounding the disease is lessening but still exists. The advances made in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV in the last 40 years is remarkable.
These advances came about because of partnership between patients, their communities and healthcare professionals and the activism that ensued.
We will take a whistle-stop tour of this journey.
