Sussex Neuroscience event for Brain Awareness Week

Neuroscientists at the University of Sussex are supporting a global campaign to increase public awareness of brain research with a free event on campus.
The Brain Awareness Week event, which takes place on 16 March, will see members of Sussex Neuroscience showcase their research with public lectures and hands-on activities.

Professor Louise Serpell, one of the Directors of Sussex Neuroscience, said: “Brain Awareness Week is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the fantastic Neuroscience research happening at Sussex with members of the University and our local community.”

Researchers will engage with attendees with soapbox-style short talks and hands-on activities, covering a wide range of brain research, from the causes of dementia to pavlovian conditioning.

The event will also see two public lectures; Professor Claudio Alonso, School of Life Sciences, will explore Neurogenetics and the path from molecules to behaviour and Professor Sarah Garfinkel, Brighton Sussex Medical School, will cover heart-brain interactions in emotion and memory.

The University of Sussex has one of the highest densities of Neuroscience faculty of any university in the UK, with about 50 research groups.

Sussex Neuroscience is a research programme supporting the community of neuroscientists on campus, who are based in the Schools of Life Sciences, Psychology and Engineering and Informatics and in Brighton and Sussex Medical School. This successful research programme underpins cutting-edge research and doctoral training in areas from the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease to the brain activity underlying consciousness.

The event, which is suitable for children, will take place from 4.30 to 8pm on 16 March in the Terrace Room of Bramber House.
