Cutting out youth violence: The trauma surgeon taking on London’s gun and knife violence epidemic
A leading trauma surgeon who saves lives through surgery, community work and an innovative programme helping victims of knife and gun crime is giving this year’s BSMS welcome lecture.
Mr Martin Griffiths has spent the past 15 years working in the community in east London to reduce violence, visiting schools and educating young people about the stark realities of knife and gun crime. He set up the UK’s first integrated ward-based violence reduction service at Barts Health NHS Trust, which has had spectacular success in reducing retaliation and violent re-offending among vulnerable young people.
Martin has worked with the courts in secondary prevention programmes, sits on the Violent Crime Prevention Board, is patron of St Giles Trust, and ambassador for Mary Seacole Trust and Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London. His fascinating story looks at how doctors can play a major role in supporting their patients, and affecting change in the wider community.
Martin's lecture will take place at 6.30pm in the Chowen Lecture Theatre at the Medical School Teaching Building.
Tickets for the public lecture are free.
