Biography

Iris Asllani is Head of MRI Physics and Associate Professor of Clinical Neuroscience, working at the interface of fundamental physics and clinical neuroscience. Trained as both a physicist and biomedical engineer, she develops advanced MRI methods and applies them to mechanistic questions in brain physiology and disease.

She received her undergraduate degree in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from the University of Tirana and is a two-time Fulbright Scholar. She completed an MSc in Microscopy and a PhD in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Physics  in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington.

Prior to joining Sussex, Dr Asllani spent a decade at Columbia University, where she played a key role in building the MRI Center and led the Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) programme. While her early work focused on perfusion imaging, her current research centres on integrated, multimodal neuroimaging approaches that link physiology, metabolism, and brain function.

She is also deeply committed to global MRI capacity building and equity, serving as Vice President of the Consortium for Advancement of MRI Education and Research in Africa (CAMERA) and as a faculty advisor for Engineering World Health (EWH).
