Senior General Practice Teaching Fellow
Location: Watson Building, University of Brighton, Falmer, BN1 9PH

Areas of expertise: Teaching general practice through simulated consultations, teaching consultation skills, teaching management of headaches in general practice, technology enhanced learning in medical education. 

Research areas: Undergraduate medical education in the field of general practice. 

Other relevant positions: Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; Member of the Academy of Medical Educators; Supervision: Supporting academic F2s working in the GP curriculum (years 4 & 5).

Biography

Dr Carl Fernandes’ journey to working at Brighton and Sussex Medical School began rather close by – he grew up in Brighton. He left to train as a doctor in London at The Royal Free and University College Medical School. After qualifying, he decided he was called to become a general practitioner and he joined the University College London Hospitals GP training scheme.

As a GP, he worked in London before returning to Brighton, where the opportunity to teach drew him to BSMS. Within the last few years, he has engaged with undergraduate BSMS students across all years and was recently awarded a distinction in his MSc Clinical Education. In his current role, he enjoys teaching alongside a richly diverse team of academic GPs. His work focuses on the general practice curriculum in Years 4 & 5.

Research

These include general practice teaching in undergraduate medicine and the history of medicine in Brighton.
