Biography

Alessandro holds a Ph.D. in Mental Health & Wellbeing obtained at the University of Nottingham, an MSc in Mental Health Studies from King’s College, London. He secured funding from the ESRC (£3,750) to train in international health policy at the World Health Organisation in Geneva. While working in the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Alessandro was involved in the work streams of the Quality-Rights initiative, which covered areas around building capacity to understand and promote human rights and recovery and improving the quality of care and human rights conditions in secondary mental health services for adults worldwide. His contribution to the Quality Rights initiative helped explore examples of community-based and recovery-oriented services respecting the human rights of patients. As part of his research post at UCL, Alessandro trained in QGIS and spatial analysis at the University of Oxford to report geographically the funding distribution of household support funding scheme across local authorities and by index of income deprivation. At BSMS, Alessandro is looking at service utilisation post A&E admission in people with dementia and the experience of delivering emergency crisis care in dementia through the perspective of healthcare professionals working in emergency services.

Research

His research interests focus on behaviour change and risk factors for dementia prevention. In his past work, Alessandro has focused on physical exercise for disease prevention and published a Cochrane review on population-based interventions on falls prevention. He is currently exploring emergency care pathway and crisis care provision in dementia in view of optimising crisis care and reducing avoidable hospitalisation and mortality.
