Meet Lisa Baker, Divisional Assistant.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

I come from an administrative background, studying business administration for two years after leaving school. I have worked in the public sector for most of my career, starting at Lewes District Council and then East Sussex County Council before moving into the NHS/university.

What brought you to BSMS?

Just before starting at BSMS, I was working for the integrated care team at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. I have always been interested in all things medical so when the advert came out for an administrative assistant at a new medical school I decided to apply and luckily got the role.

Could you tell us a little bit more about your role?

I joined BSMS in 2003 as the divisional assistant to the Chair of Medicine and the Chair of Anatomy. The School created five departments and I became the Departmental Assistant for Clinical and Experimental Medicine. I took a secondment in February 2022 still within BSMS but working as the Postgraduate Research Administrator. I also provide interim support for the Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Frailty and Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning.

What's your favourite memory from your time at BSMS?

I think one of my favourite memories would be attending the graduation ceremony for the first cohort of students, being a new medical school to see them become doctors was great.

What is your biggest professional achievement?

As one of the initial members of the now professional services team, setting up the administrative processes etc for the heads of department and to still have those being used now (albeit with a few tweaks).

Who has inspired you most in life?

I would say my parents.

Describe BSMS in three words.

Welcoming, fascinating, creative.

What’s the best piece of advice you would give your younger self?

To always believe that you are good enough.
