Fees and funding

Fees

Fees below are for applicants starting their Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BM BS) in September 2024.

UK students

Fees for UK students starting the undergraduate medical degree in 2024 are £9,250 per year. Fees are subject to UK Government confirmation and to regulatory approval, and may change throughout the period of enrolment on the course as the Government reviews fee levels.

International students

Fees for international students are £44,500 per year. In subsequent years, fees for international students starting in 2024 will rise by 7% per year. If offered a place to study at BSMS, you will be required to pay a £5,000 tuition fee deposit when you accept your offer.

Island students

Students from the Isle of Man and Channel Islands who have lived in the islands or UK for three years are eligible for UK/Home fee status. Please contact your island education office for information on the financial support available to you. Island students are not eligible for student funding from the UK government.

EU students

EU students will pay international fees and are not eligible for student funding from the UK government. However, there are exceptions to this for EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Financial support may be available to BSMS students, and students should contact the University of Brighton Student Advice Service to find out what they may be eligible for:

They will explain which funds you might be eligible for, and how to access them. Their experienced staff can also advise on statutory funding, accessing benefits and making your money go further.

University of Brighton bursary

The University of Brighton provides financial support to students from lower-income families.

Eligible UK students with a household income of less than £25,000 are entitled to the following in addition to any UK Government support:

Years 1-4 – a £500 cash bursary in each year of study
Year 5 – university funding is not available to students in receipt of an NHS Bursary (see below).

The University of Brighton also provides a Care Leaver’s bursary and Estranged Student’s bursary to eligible students, and sports scholarships are available.

NHS Bursary

From the fifth year of study, you may be eligible for an NHS Bursary. This may include:

Support with tuition fees
Grants towards living costs
Additional help, depending on your circumstances (eg, Dependents’ Allowance).

Students with a previous degree

If you are a UK student and already have a degree you may find funding difficult for the BM BS degree, as you will not have access to a Tuition Fee Loan. However, you can apply for a partially means-tested Maintenance Loan to help towards living costs such as food and rent. From your fifth year of study you may be eligible for an NHS Bursary.

The universities and external charitable organisations are, at times, able to make additional support available specifically for graduate students, subject to eligibility.

Other financial support

To assist new full-time home (UK) students studying for their first degree, a range of financial support is provided by the UK Government:

You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover your tuition fees in full, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over a certain threshold.
You can apply for a partially means-tested Maintenance Loan to help towards living costs such as food and rent.
If you are a parent or a carer, other means-tested financial support is also available, including a Parents’ Learning Allowance and a Childcare Grant.

Remember in all cases to seek advice if financial difficulties impact on your studies, wellbeing or other parts of your life. The BSMS Student Advice team will be happy to discuss these issues with you. While there may be limits to the course adjustments that can be offered, it’s important to ask for help if needed. The University of Brighton Student Advice Service also offer information and advice on additional sources of funding, money management and debt counselling.

Typical costs

Brighton and Hove is currently the most expensive place to be a student in the UK outside of London. Prospective students should take this into account when applying to study medicine. Read our typical costs guide below for more information on studying and living in Brighton and Hove.

University halls

£125–£176 per week (based on 2023 figures) depending on type of accommodation. Costs include electricity, heating, water rates, the internet and contents insurance. Internet access is provided as a campus wide service.

Shared houses

Average £135 per week ( based on 2022 figures). Rents for private accommodation do not include utility bills, food or insurance.

Laptop

While PCs and 4–6 hour loan Chromebooks are available at both universities, to enable you to make the most of the learning opportunities at BSMS, we strongly recommend that you have a suitable laptop computer. The minimum specification for a laptop is:

Intel i5 or equivalent
Windows 10 or Mac OS 10.14 or later
8Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD
Full HD screen

You will be entitled to a range of free software from the University of Brighton, including Microsoft Office.

Other costs

You should add the one-off cost of buying a stethoscope (approximately £50). There can also be costs for travel, parking etc when on regional attachments, and travel, accommodation and living expenses for your fifth-year clinical elective. However, these costs will vary, depending on where you go, and reimbursement schemes and bursaries are available to support you.

Paid work while studying

At BSMS we provide opportunities for our students to earn money where we can.

Students are paid to assist with admissions, outreach and open days, for example, and other jobs are available from time to time. The careers services of both universities are experienced in helping students find part-time or vacation work, whether on campus or in the local area (some students are able to work in the NHS or other healthcare jobs).

As you progress through the degree, your study will require an increasingly significant time commitment throughout the week, and term times will lengthen.

Placement and travel expenses

BSMS placements take place over a wide geographical area (mainly within East and West Sussex). The medical school follows a travel and accommodation policy to authorise student reimbursement for some placement expenses.

Expenses are normally allowed where journeys are outside the immediate geographical area or difficult to reach by public transport. Free accommodation is provided for students on placements of four weeks or more at our more remote partner hospitals, so they don’t have to commute for longer periods from their Brighton term-time address.
